Password Recovery


How  to Routers Recover password

Basically there is two ways of recovering  lost password 


Method-1
As soon as the router/switch starts press Ctrl+Break Key Together within 1 min of it to start.
Ctrl+break --- for rommon mode
Default Confrig-register value 0x2102
1.      Press Break on the terminal keyboard within 60 seconds of power up in order to put the router into ROMmon.
2.      Rommon>confreg 0x2142 .
This step bypasses the startup configuration where the passwords are stored.
3.      rommon 2>Reset .
The router reboots, but ignores the saved configuration. Now you are in setup mode
4.      Type no after each setup question, or press Ctrl-C in order to skip the initial setup procedure.
5.      Type configure memory or copy startup-config running-config in order to copy the nonvolatile RAM (NVRAM) into memory.
Do not type copy running-config startup-config or write. These commands erase your startup configuration.
Now you can change the password and save the configuration in startup configuration in nvram
6.     Router-Rcy(config)#config-register 0x2102-----------------to set the default config-reg value
7.      Type write memory or copy running-config startup-config in order to commit the changes.

Summary:-
Router-Rcy#reload
###################################ctrl+break
Rommon>confreg 0x2142
Rommon>reset

Router-Rcy>
Router-Rcy#copy startup-config running-config
Router-Rcy(config) #-----------------change the required password
Router-Rcy (config)#config-register 0x2102
Router-Rcy#copy running-config startup-config
Router-Rcy #exit
Now you know the password

Procedure 2


Complete these steps in order to recover your password:
1.      Shut down the router.
2.      Remove the compact flash that is at the back of the router.
3.      Power on the router.
4.      Once the Rommon1> prompt appears, enter this command:
5.    Rommon1> confreg 0x2142
6.      Insert the compact flash.
7.      Type reset.
8.      Router-Rcy>enable.
9.       Router-Rcy#configure memory 
create a new user name and password:
Router-Rcy#config-register              0x2102
Router-Rcy#write memory
10.  Reload the router, and then use the new user name and password to log in to the route
